April 23rd is National Lost Dog Awareness Day. We know, it’s probably more fun to talk about playing with Fido or choosing his toys and treats, but this is a very important topic. As many as one in three pets gets lost at least once in their lifetime. While we hope that all of our canine patients stay safe and sound at home, we do want to offer some information on this topic. A local Norwalk, CA veterinarian discusses lost dogs below.

History

Lost Dog Awareness Day was created with a very specific purpose in mind: reminding people that not all stray dogs are homeless, and also to give people that are still looking for their pets a bit of hope. The day was started by the Lost Dogs of America, an all-volunteer organization that works to reunite pets with their worried humans. They have reunited more than 145,000 dogs with their humans since 2011. That’s pretty amazing!

Risks

Although any dog can get out at any time, some occasions are more dangerous than others. New Year’s Even and July 4th both see spikes in lost dog reports. That’s because the noise and commotion from fireworks can frighten dogs and cause them to bolt. You’ll also need to be extra careful when moving, and anytime your home has a lot of guests and/or commotion. Fido may also be extra nervous during storms, fires, and earthquakes.

Prevention

There are some things you can do to decrease the chances of your pooch getting lost. First and foremost, keep Fido leashed whenever you take him off your property. If you have a yard, make sure that your fencing is secure and that your gate closes securely. Training is important as well. Teach your canine buddy simple commands, such as Stay and Come. Last but not least, make sure your pup is microchipped and wearing ID tags.

What To Do

If Fido slips his leash or runs out the gate, start searching your neighborhood immediately. If possible, enlist some neighbors to help. Check ditches and wooded lots! Next, make some flyers. These should show a few different views of Fido, and should include information about a reward. Post these locally and online. Then, start checking shelters and classified ads. Don’t give up!
