Did you know that the first week of October is Walk Your Dog Week? That crisp autumn air and beautiful foliage can make for prime dog-walking weather. This is a perfect time of year to grab a coffee and take a long stroll with your furry best friend! A Norwalk, CA veterinarian offers a few ‘pawesome’ tips on walking your canine buddy below.
Training
Those daily walks will be much more pleasant for both you and Fido if your pet is properly trained. Make sure your canine friend obeys basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, and Heel . If your dog has a habit of lunging after squirrels, cats, and/or other pooches, work on breaking this habit. Every time your pup tries to pull you, immediately turn around and go the other way. The back and forth will get tiresome … but that’s why it works. Sooner or later, your four-legged pal will figure out that pulling on you doesn’t work.
Exercise
Those regular walks actually serve several purposes for our canine companion. They are of course important for sanitation. However, they also provide your four-legged buddy with his daily doggy workout. Keeping fit is just as important for dogs as it is for people! (The fresh air and exercise will be good for you, too.) Walking also gives you quiet quality time with your pet, and can help reinforce that special bond of friendship between you. Last but not least, it offers Fido beneficial mental stimulation. Taking in new sights, sounds, and smells is a great way to provide your furry pal with entertainment and stimulation, and keep him from getting bored.
Leashes
Make sure your pet’s gear is in good shape and fits him comfortably. Some dogs, such as small dogs and brachycephalic breeds, should wear harnesses, rather than collars. Retractable leashes have become very popular, and with good reason. They give your four-legged buddy a bit more freedom, while still keeping him under control. However, these can be dangerous in certain situations. We don’t recommend using them near potential hazards, such as busy roads or cliffs. They also aren’t great options for situations where Fido may encounter other dogs. You don’t want your pup getting tangled up with another pooch!
