Responsible Dog Ownership Day
September 15, 2020

There’s a pretty important doggy holiday coming up. September 19 th is Responsible Dog Ownership Day. Our canine pals are loyal, loving, smart, brave, and cuddly, not to mention cute and fun. However, it’s easy to forget that they have some specific needs. Taking great care of Fido entails much more than filling his food bowl and rubbing his belly. A local Norwalk, CA vet lists some great things to put on your to-do list below.

Veterinary Appointment

Many of our canine patients don’t see us as often as they should. Fido will need to come in a few times as a puppy, as he’ll need to be fixed, microchipped, and started out with his initial exams, vaccinations, and parasite control products. Full-grown pups should come in at least once a year. You’ll also want to bring him in if you notice any signs of illness. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Toys

Fido is always adorable when he spots a new toy. Those playthings aren’t just fun for your pet, however: they’re also crucial to his health and well-being. Playing gives Fido a great workout, and allows him to burn off those zoomies. They also keep him entertained, and offer him a healthy outlet for any doggy angst he’s feeling. Keep your furry friend’s toybox full!

Dental Care

Did you know that over 80 percent of our canine companions have dental issues? Fido can’t tell you if his teeth hurt, and he can’t brush those choppers himself. Keep up with his dental care needs! Ask your vet for specific advice.

Adventures

Just like people, pets can get bored and restless. Even if you have a yard, it’s important to take Fido for at least a daily walk. Those strolls offer exercise, entertainment, and enrichment. Walking a pretty trail with your furry best friend is a great way to enjoy a nice day!

Training

Training isn’t just about petiquette. It’s also important for safety reasons. That makes it a big part of being a responsible dog owner. Make sure Fido obeys basic commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down.

Grooming

Fido may not love baths, but he will be much more comfortable with clean, soft fur. Nail trims and ear care are also important.

Please contact us if ever we can be of assistance. As your local Norwalk, CA vet clinic, we’re here for you!
