There’s a pre tty important doggy holiday around the corner, one that is bound to get tails wagging all over the country. February 23rd is Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day! Fido is super cute when he thinks he may be about to get a biscuit. A local Norwalk, CA vet discusses choosing and giving dog treats below.
Dogs aren’t particularly picky about their snacks. Fido will probably be more than delighted with anything you bring home. However, there are a few things to consider when buying treats. First, be sure to choose snacks that are appropriate for your furry friend’s size and age. Also, take a look at the label. Opt for things that use whole ingredients. Meat, fish, or poultry should be listed first and most often.
If you like baking, you can certainly try your hand at making treats. This is a great way to customize your pup’s snacks to suit his tastes and/or fit any dietary restrictions he has. These also make cute gifts for Fido’s four-legged friends. There are lots of recipes online, but you can also mix and match. The main thing is to stick with safe ingredients. Some good ones are ripe bananas, sodium-free broth, shredded meat, plain yogurt, pureed squash or pumpkin, organic baby food, wheat-germ oil, and natural peanut butter. You can also add things like cheese, bacon bits, eggs, and pet-safe fruits and veggies.
Treats also make great training aids for Man’s Best Friend. Have Fido do something for his snack. This is a wonderful way to reinforce your four-legged friend’s training. You may also find that your pooch actually likes learning new things. Many dogs do!
As you may have noticed, Fido isn’t very picky. This can be cute, but it can also be dangerous. It’s very easy for pooches to snap up something that isn’t safe for them. Some unsafe foods include garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; grapes, currants, and raisins; chocolate; alcohol; meat on the bone; avocado; and alcohol. Ask your vet for more information.
You’ve probably noticed that our canine pals are very, very good at begging. This is bad manners. It also increases the risk of Fido getting his paws on something that isn’t safe for him. Steel yourself against those sad eyes!
