Holidays With Kittens
December 15, 2021
Happy Holidays! This time of year can be both fun and dangerous for our feline pals, especially young ones. Older cats may be content to nap through most of the seasonal festivities, but kittens will be more interested in making mischief. A Norwalk, CA vet discusses Fluffy’s first Christmas below.

Monitor Guest Interactions

Kittens are curious, playful, tiny, and extremely fragile. That’s a dangerous combination! It’s easy for little Fluffy to get overlooked, which puts her in grave danger of someone accidentally sitting or stepping on her. Your pet won’t make a large lump under a blanket. She could also get hurt if she sits under a recliner or rocking chair. Keep a close eye on your tiny furball!

Fill That Stocking

Fill little Fluffy’s stocking with lots of fun gifts and toys. Toys, toys, and more toys! (A word to the wise: if your pet is younger than six months, skip the catnip, as it may not affect her yet.)

Take Lots Of Photos

We love seeing pictures of kittens! To get really cute pictures of little Fluffy in front of the tree, try experimenting with the focus, so the background blurs a bit. You may also want to get down on the ground, so you’re at her eye level.

Decorate Carefully

The holidays can be a treacherous time for kittens! Keep anything that could be dangerous out of paws’ reach. That includes anything with strings or cords, such as tinsel, garlands, ribbons, and lights; small or sharp objects, such as many ornaments and ornament hooks; and candles. Many holiday plants, such as poinsettias, are toxic as well.

Petproof The Tree

You may need to take a few precautions to keep your fuzzy buddy out of the tree. Put only safe, unbreakable objects on the lower branches. You can also secure the tree top to the wall or ceiling with fishing line. Bribery and distraction can also be very helpful. Take time to play with your kitten every day. If you wear little Fluffy out playing, she may be too tired to mess with the tree.

It’s very important for cats to feel loved and safe. Pay lots of attention to her, and let her snooze on your lap. Sleeping kittens are the ‘purrfect’ finishing touch to a cozy holiday scene! Happy Holidays from Ashton Animal Hospital, your Norwalk, CA animal clinic. Call us anytime!
