Dog Care Mistakes

August 15 2021

Our canine buddies are very smart and intuitive, and they make wonderful pets and companions. We’ve been buddies with Fido for almost 30,000 years! However, it’s easy to forget that Man’s BFF needs more than food, walks, and belly rubs to thrive. A Norwalk, CA vet discusses dog care mistakes below.

Not Enough Exercise

Dogs need regular exercise to stay healthy, just like people do. If Fido isn’t getting enough activity, he’ll be at higher risk of becoming obese. He may also get restless and bored. Pups that have too much pent-up angst tend to channel that energy into things like digging and chewing. Every pooch is different, but most need at least a daily walk, and perhaps a fun play session.

Lack Of Training

You don’t have to teach Fido how to fetch your slippers or do your laundry. However, your canine friend should know basic doggy obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. This isn’t just a matter of petiquette: it’s important for safety reasons, too.

Roaming

Man’s Best Bud is very loyal. However, Fido does have a short attention span, a love for exploring, and an innate prey drive … not to mention a fascination for chasing cats and squirrels. That’s a dangerous combination! Keep your furry buddy leashed in areas that aren’t fenced in.

Punishment

We know, it’s maddening to discover that your pet has chewed your shoes or dug up the garden. However, punishing Fido won’t help. He’s just being a dog, and following his natural instincts. Make sure he’s getting enough playtime, exercise, and attention, and focus on rewarding good behavior instead.

Overfeeding

Good nutrition is crucial to your pup’s health and well-being. It’s understandable that many people like to pamper their pets with yummy snacks. However, it’s important to keep Fido at a healthy weight. Offer your canine pal a high-quality food. Treats are fine, but don’t let your furry friend’s theatrics cajole you into giving him too much bacon.

Not Enough Veterinary Care

Fido’s needs will change as he ages. Puppies need their initial exams, vaccines, and parasite control, as well as microchipping and spay/neuter surgery. Adult dogs should mostly need wellness and preventative care, while senior pooches need more attention. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.
