Keeping a Senior Cat Comfortable
August 15, 2020

Is your feline buddy aged seven or older? If so, you’ve got a furry little senior on your hands … even if Fluffy still thinks of herself as a kitten. Kitties generally age gracefully, so you’re not likely to see drastic changes right away. However, your pet will benefit from some extra TLC in her golden years. Read on as a Downey, CA vet offers tips on keeping a senior cat comfy and purring.

Veterinary Care

First and foremost, make sure that your kitty sees her doctor regularly. It’s important to stay on top of any changes that could indicate developing medical issues, so they can be treated early. This can go a long way towards keeping your furball healthy!

Beds

It probably isn’t much of a surprise to find comfy beds on this list. Kitties are always on the hunt for new napping spots! Make sure Fluffy has lots of cozy spots to choose from for all of those daily snoozes.

Senior-Friendly Purrniture

As your cat ages, she may have a hard time climbing a cat tower, or getting on to a catwalk. Get a few pieces that are easy for her to use.

Litterbox

Older felines often have trouble getting in and out of litterboxes with high sides. Get your furry buddy something that’s easier for her to manage, such as a litterbox designed just for senior kitties. If you have a large house or more than one floor, keep litterboxes on every level, so your pet doesn’t have to use the stairs as much.

Nightlight

Fluffy may develop issues with her vision as she ages, and might have a hard time seeing at night. Setting out a nightlight will help your furry friend find her way around after dark.

Pet Ramps

Kitties may have a hard time jumping to their favorite lookouts as they age. Get some pet ramps for Fluffy. You can also just put a footstool or ottoman out for her.

Grooming

Your feline friend may get stiff and sore as she ages, and may have trouble reaching her entire body when grooming herself. Help her out by gently brushing her. This is also a great way to spend some quality time with your kitty, and get that motor started!
