Adopting a Senior Cat
November 1, 2018

November is Adopt a Senior Cat Month! This is one cause we are happy to support! We love seeing sweet older cats get a second chance at happiness. Here, Norwalk, CA vet discusses adopting senior cats.

Benefits of Adopting An Older Kitty

Senior cats have a very hard time getting adopted, which is very unfair. It’s a wonderful feeling to know you’ve saved an animal’s life! Fluffy is not only super sweet and lovable, she’s also very calm. Bonus: You won’t have to worry about your pet pouncing on your toes in the middle of the night, or knocking everything off your countertop.

Getting Prepared

Keep Fluffy’s age in mind when you go shopping. Choose a litterbox with low sides, which will be easy for her to get in and out of. Your pet will need some toys, but overall you’ll want to focus more on keeping her comfortable than keeping her entertained. If you get kitty furniture, choose pieces with a bottom level that is close to the ground. This will be easier for her to get on and off.

Helping Fluffy Settle In

Going to a new home is a big deal for a cat. Fluffy may need time to adjust. If you have other pets, make introductions slowly, over the course of several days. A few simple touches can help make your home more comfortable for her. Leaving a nightlight on after dark will help her get around at night. Pet ramps or stairs can also be beneficial.

Veterinary Care

A trip to the vet’s should definitely be on the agenda for that first week or so. Most likely, Fluffy will already be fixed, but you’ll want to make sure that she is microchipped and current on her vaccines and parasite control. A thorough exam is also a must. While you’re there, ask for tips on your cat’s diet and care needs.

Getting That Motor Started

Some cats will immediately make themselves at home, and hop into your lap on Day One. Other kitties are much more shy. Don’t force attention on your feline friend at first. Just focus on giving her good care. Toys and treats will help win her trust. You’ll have purrs and cuddles before you know it!
