Tips For Fostering Pets
June 1, 2022
Did you know that June is Foster A Pet Month? If you love animals, fostering may be something you want to consider. It’s a wonderful way to make a difference, but does not present the long-term commitment that adoption does. A Norwalk, CA vet offers some tips on fostering pets in this article.

Ask Questions

Hopefully this goes without saying, but there are a lot of things to consider with fostering. There are also sometimes variables. For instance, fostering a litter of kittens or puppies may only be a commitment of a month or so, while other pets may need to stay with their fosters until they get adopted. There are also plenty of foster fails out there; pets whose foster homes ended up becoming their forever homes!

Consider Other Pets

One factor you definitely want to consider would be your other pets, if you have any. You may need to keep your four-legged guests separated from your permanent residents. You’ll also need to allocate time to your fosters, without depriving your own furry pals of the attention they need.

Check Your Budget

Shelters all work a bit differently. Some do provide food and supplies. However, many animal rescues rely on donations and charity. You may be expected to provide food, toys, treats, and other necessities for your furry wards.

Pat Yourself On The Back

Fostering is a very selfless act. It can be incredibly fulfilling to watch a scared, shy pet starting to come out of their shell, or to see a tiny kitten or puppy thrive with good care. Kudos!

Get The Household On Board

It’s important for the entire family to be on the same page for pet care. Talk to the other members of your household. You want to be sure everyone is in alignment with things like house rules, treats, and care duties.

A New Beginning

One of the hardest things about fostering—okay, probably the hardest thing about fostering—is the moment when you have to say goodbye. It’s not easy watching a pet you’ve cared for and grown attached to ride off into the sunset with a new family. Many fosters find it very bittersweet. If you suspect you’ll get too attached, you could always consider volunteering instead. Please reach out with questions or concerns about your pet’s health or care.
