February 3rd is Golden Retriever Day! We’re happy to help promote this one, and we suspect that our Golden Retriever buddies would be happy to celebrate. Actually, Goldens tend to be happy about pretty much everything! A local Norwalk, CA vet discusses this lovable pup below.

Temperament

Goldens are known for being friendly. In fact, their cheerful temperaments are a big part of the reason they’ve become so popular. Fido is very active, and needs lots of walks and playtime. He may also enjoy doggy activities, such as agility competitions. Because Goldens tend to be such Good Boys, they are often found working as service dogs or in other positions.

Celebrity Pups

Goldens are the chosen pooch of many celebrities, including Jimmy Fallon, Adam Levine, Emma Stone, and Oprah. Many of them have become celebrities in their own right. Fido has starred in many movies and TV shows, including Air Bud, The Retrievers, Homeward Bound, and A Dog’s Purpose, to name a few.

Three Times The Fun

There are three types of Goldens: English, Canadian, and American. They all look very similar, though the English ones tend to be a bit stockier and usually have lighter fur. Speaking of fur, Fido wears one of three official shades: gold, light gold, and dark gold. That fur does require careful maintenance, though: these guys are pretty heavy shedders.

Basics

Goldens are typically very sweet, affectionate, and playful, They also absolutely love the water. Fido is a wonderful family pet: he’s good with kids, seniors, and cats, and makes the perfect addition to any family photo. Have we mentioned the fact that these dogs are absolutely adorable?

If you want to see something that is bound to make you smile, just do a video search on Golden Retrievers. In one recent viral video, you’ll see a Golden kissing his ‘girlfriend’ through a fence. And then there’s Winston, a playful pup who decided to befriend some ducks. The pooch jumped into a canal to play with the ducks, almost taking his owner with him. That video is actually the epitome of what it’s like to have a Golden: Fido loves the water, wants to be friends with everyone, and will both melt your heart and exasperate you with his doggy shenanigans.
