Checklist For Adopting A Senior Dog
November 21, 2021
November is Adopt A Senior Dog Month! We’re more than happy to help spread the word about this great cause. Senior dogs are often overlooked in favor of puppies. However, they sometimes make the best pets! Here, a Norwalk, CA vet lists some things to put on your to-do list if you’re adopting an older pooch.

Beds

There are few things more adorable than older dogs peacefully napping in their beds! We recommend getting Fido a good orthopedic doggy bed. This will help your canine buddy sleep comfortably at night, and will also cushion him from chilly floors. Add a washable, waterproof cover and a soft throw blanket.

Food

Fido will need a high-quality food, one that is right for his age, size, breed, and health. He may also benefit from supplements, particularly if he has a bone/joint condition, such as arthritis or hip dysplasia. Ask your vet for advice on your furry pal’s diet, including recommendations on serving sizes and suitable treats.

Petproofing

In some ways, petproofing for a senior dog is just like petproofing for a puppy. You’ll still need to address things like toxic plants and small or sharp objects. However, you’ll also want to check for things that Fido could trip or slip on. We also recommend putting grates or gates in front of stairs and fireplaces. If you have a pool, keep that fenced or gated off as well.

Footing

Slipping and falling is just as dangerous for senior pets as it is for elderly people. If you have a lot of floors, set out area rugs and carpet runners for Fido.

Supplies

Keep Fido’s age in mind when you go shopping. Your pooch will need dental products, grooming supplies, a carrier or crate, a leash and a harness or collar. Your furry buddy won’t be as playful as a puppy, but he’ll still need some toys. Look for soft ones, as these are easier on your pet’s mouth.

Yard Check

Do you have a yard for your canine companion to play in? Make sure that your fencing is secure. You’ll also want to remove any foxtails or toxic plants from your yard. Older pets tend to be very sensitive to temperature extremes, so limit Fido’s outdoor time when it’s hot or cold out. As your local Norwalk, CA veterinary clinic, we’re here to help.
