Life With Kittens
April 15, 2021

It’s kitten s eason again, and many people are welcoming tiny, adorable balls of fur into their lives. Few things bring us as much joy as baby cats do. Of course, little Fluffy can be quite a handful! Here, a Norwalk, CA vet offers some tips on living with a kitten.

P etproofing Is A Must

One thing we know about kittens? They’re basically tiny balls of mischief. Little Fluffy will try to climb, eat, play with, or explore pretty much everything in her new kingdom. In other words, everything is a toy to your little buddy. Make your place safe for her by addressing potential safety hazards. These include toxic plants, wires and cords, chemicals, medications, plastic bags, and anything small or sharp. You’ll also need to keep major appliances, like toilets, shut.

Prepare To Be Cat Furniture

Did you know that baby cats can sleep up to 20 hours a day? Being adorable is pretty hard work! Let your furball doze off in your lap or on your arms. This will help her feel loved, which will strengthen the bond between you.

Teach Good Manners

Little Fluffy will learn a lot about the do’s and don’ts of being a cat over the course of the next few months. Nip bad habits, like biting and scratching, in the bud. It’s also important for her to have things like scratching posts and toys to take her aggression out on.

Take Photos

Baby cats grow very fast. You can see a difference in little Fluffy even from one day to another. Get lots of pictures of this adorable phase!

Build A Strong Bond

Kittens often think of their humans as parents. However, that relationship has to be nurtured. Spend time with your pet every day, and make sure she feels loved and safe. Your heart may melt a bit when little Fluffy curls up on your lap or snuggles up beside you at night. That’s just purr for the course.

Wait It Out

You may be surprised at how much time you spend plucking your little furball off the curtains or disentangling her from things. Don’t worry! This super cute/super frisky stage doesn’t last long. You’ll have a happy, purring adult cat before you know it!
