Is your kitty due for a veterinary exam? While Fluffy would no doubt prefer to stay home and take another nap, it is important for her to come in regularly. But what happens when you get back home again? A local Norwalk, CA vet offers some post-appointment care tips for kitties in this article.

Let Her Nap

It’s probably safe to say that Fluffy will be very relieved to get home, and may immediately start catching up on her naps. In fact, your pet may be quite drowsy, especially if she’s gotten vaccines. This is quite common. Your kitty may sleep more than usual for the next day or so, but she should be back to normal after about 36 hours. Occasionally, pets have more severe reactions, which can include vomiting, fever, swelling, stiffness, and disorientation. Fortunately, these complications are quite rare. However, if you do see any of these signs, call your vet immediately.

Grooming

Most of our feline patients are definitely not big fans of going on car rides. Kitties often shed heavily when they are feeling stressed. You may find quite a bit of cat fur all over your car (and yourself) when you get home. Brushing your cute pet will help remove any dead fur that is still in her coat. You might want to vacuum the car out as well.

Cleaning

This is a great time to wash your cat’s bed, and do some vacuuming. If your furry friend has fleas and has just gotten some parasite control, this will help prevent reinfestation. If nothing else, Fluffy will have a clean, comfy bed for that recuperation nap we mentioned above.

Purr Reactivation

Our feline pals really don’t understand the point of veterinary care. They also get quite stressed out and frightened whenever they are taken out of their kingdoms. (In many cases, kitties are more anxious about the car ride than their actual appointment, but that’s beside the point.) Once Fluffy gets home again, get her little motor restarted by paying her lots of attention. A new toy, a special treat, or perhaps some catnip will help your furball relax.

Filing

It’s a good idea to keep your kitty’s medical records in one spot. Get a dedicated folder for Fluffy, and put her paperwork in that.
