An important and often overlooked part of your pet's overall health is their dental health. Its associated problems can cause (and can possibly be caused by) other serious health issues. For this reason, it is crucial to check your pet's teeth, mouth, and gums for any issues, such as foul smells, visible signs of tartar, plaque, and decay. Pets should have their teeth checked by a veterinarian at least once a year, but if you have noticed problems with your pet's teeth, you will want to get them checked out sooner.

If your dog or cat has bad breath, broken or loose teeth, extra or retained baby teeth, discolored teeth, or tartar; or if they are experiencing abnormal chewing, drooling, dropping food from their mouth, reduced appetite, pain in mouth, bleeding from mouth, or swelling around the mouth, you should take your pet to a vet promptly. It is important to be careful when handling your pet when he or she is in pain, as a pet in distress might bite. While it is not that common for pets to get cavities, they do develop many of the same types of dental problems as people, like broken teeth and roots, abscesses and infected teeth, cysts or tumors in the mouth, malocclusion, broken or fractured jaw, palate defects, and periodontal disease.

Among the most common dental issues found in pets is periodontal disease, which can lead to associated problems found in the liver, kidney, and heart muscles. In most pets, by the age of 3 years old, early signs of periodontal disease become evident, and these conditions can worsen if steps for preventative dental care are not taken. This can be treated with thorough dental cleanings and even radiography to determine the disease's extent and severity.

Because there isn't any way for a veterinarian to convey the idea that dental cleanings and treatments are beneficial to them (as pets), it is nearly impossible to keep pets still and cooperative when performing dental procedures. Therefore, the use of anesthesia and sedation is required to minimize discomfort and pain and to complete a deeper cleaning, even beneath the gum line. As the pet patient is sedated, they are prevented from moving around and attempting to escape or bite. While it has its own risks, it is now a much safer procedure with minimal risk that is far outweighed by the benefits.

Dental health can be practiced at home for your pet, with regular brushing of your pet's teeth being at the top of the list of preventing oral health issues. Call Ashton Animal Hospital to set up an appointment for a dental check up for your dog or cat at 562-803-1551!

Testimonials

The staff is so nice and helpful. Lily receives such great care there. I have been taking my pets to Ashton since 1989 when we got our first cats. It was a natural choice in 2012 when we got our dog, to take her there as well.
